Why do I write paranormal romance?

Anna Lowe on Paranormal Romance

Why do I write paranormal romance? For the same reasons I read the genre. Reading can be an escape, a way to slip into a fantasy life that's much more thrilling than our everyday lives. Another thing that draws me to the paranormal is the fantasy element. Just imagine being able to slip into another body the way we slip into a different pair of shoes! Think running shoes versus high heels: each give you a different feel, a different persona. That's why I enjoy writing (and reading) about shapeshifters with their dual natures. Who wouldn't want to change into a dragon and swoop over the Eiffel Tower with an eternally loyal mate? That dual nature also makes it fun to contrast different shifter species: bears are earnest and cautious, while lions are easygoing, fun-loving guys. Tigers are touchy, and dragons are super intense. Throw them into tricky situations together and you get great conflict, depth of character, and some hearty laughs. The opening few chapters of Lure of the Dragon is a great example of this - that’s Book 1 in my Aloha Shifters:Jewels of the Heart series.

I also love the concept of destined mates, which fits perfectly into the shapeshifter world. That feeling of absolute certainty, of love at first sight. Not that my heroes and heroines have it easy! There are always many obstacles to overcome -- not just to be together but to survive attacks from ruthless enemies. But once they seal the deal, it’s happily ever after all the way. A happy end is that much more satisfying when the couple has worked hard for it, don’t you think?

So, what about character? I love a heroine who can stand on her own two feet – one who's doing just fine on her own. But give the heroine a good man (not to mention a chance to overcome her own inhibitions) and she’ll never turn down the chance for adventure, nor shy away from danger. And, hey - if the guy she’s destined to love just happens to be sweet, muscled, and gorgeous - well, that’s just the icing on the cake!

To me, characters are most important, but location comes a close second. I love setting my stories in exotic, edgy locations that ignite passionate romance. That’s why my Aloha Shifters series is set on gorgeous Maui, with its waterfalls, beaches, and volcanic peaks. Similarly, my Twin Moon series takes place in the desert Southwest, and my upcoming Fire Maidens stories are set in the great capitals of Europe - Paris, London, Rome, and more. After all, a good romance should be a journey in every sense of the word. Don’t you agree?

So, enough theory. Here’s how all that comes to life in my Aloha Shifter series!

LURE OF THE DRAGON by Anna Lowe (Aloha Shifters: Jewels of the Heart, Book 1)

Good dragons? Bad dragons? Twenty-four hours ago, private chef Tessa Byrne didn’t know about the terrifying world of shifters. Now she knows too much, like the fact that a ruthless dragon lord is determined to claim her — forever. Tessa flees to Maui, where sunny skies, swaying palms, and a handsome stranger conspire to play tricks with her heart. Can she truly trust Kai Llewellyn and his band of battle-hardened shapeshifters to save her from a gruesome fate?

Don’t trust a human, and never, ever fall in love with one. Those are lessons Kai learned the hard way. But Tessa is different. Her emerald eyes mirror the mysterious pendant she wears, and her flaming red hair makes his heart race. Is his inner dragon just greedy for a new kind of treasure, or is Tessa his destined mate?

EXCERPT - Chapter 1

Tessa took two shaky steps toward the ornate gate of the private driveway and stopped. Was she really going to do this?
You can trust them, Ella had said. Ella, the neighbor who’d come along at exactly the right moment and saved her life.
Tessa bit her lip. The fabric at the shoulder of her shirt was ripped, and her throat ached from the attack. Her fingers were still shaking, and her mind was haunted by visions of a terrifying beast. How could she trust anyone after what had happened less than twenty-four hours before?
You have to trust them. No one else can protect you from that monster.
Crickets chirped from the lush foliage, and a bat flew overhead, a splotch of black against the dark night. Tessa shivered in spite of the balmy night, unwilling to trust her own senses. Sure, the sea was whispering over the shore in a reassuring way. And yes, the moon’s rippling reflection over the Pacific should be soothing, like the sweet scent of hibiscus. But even the island paradise of Maui could try to deceive her. Nightmares could break the deepest peace — real-life nightmares she couldn’t block out of her memory no matter how hard she tried. She could still see the glowing eyes of the creature that had attacked her.
Mine. You will be mine, his voice boomed in her mind.
She drew a deep breath and looked over her shoulder, wishing she hadn’t sent the taxi away. She was alone at night in a remote corner of Maui, far off the beaten track, about to knock on the door of a complete stranger for help.
A very rich stranger, she decided, inspecting the gate. There was an elaborate design in the middle, but she couldn’t quite make it out. Something swirly. Toothy. Wait — was that a tail? Shit, was it a dragon, or was she seeing things?
She shook the thought away and told herself to think. A gate that massive must protect a hell of an estate — a seaside estate in Maui that had made the taxi driver whistle when she gave the address back at the airport.
Koa Point Estate,” he’d said. “You’ve got the right friends, miss.”
Tessa gnawed on her lip. These weren’t friends. They were complete strangers. And anyway, the man who’d attacked her in Phoenix was rich, too. Rich didn’t mean trustworthy — or even human.
She shook her head and turned back for the road. Who knew what secrets lay behind that gate? It would be safer to head back to Lahaina and find a hotel for the night. After a good night’s sleep, she could—
The beams of twin headlights blinded her, and a powerful engine purred into the driveway. Tessa froze as a vintage Jaguar approached then stopped. The driver’s door opened, and a tall man climbed out. His dark hair and bright blue eyes contrasted with the pure white of his dress shirt, open at the neck. Sharp, angled features cast their own sub-shadows over his face. Tall and imposing, he seemed perfectly at home in the night. Despite the fine cut of his clothes, this man exuded an untamed, animal feel, like a lion or a wolf. A predator just as capable of ripping an enemy limb from limb as he was of protecting the one he loved.
A little shiver went down her spine.
Have you decided yet?” His deep voice boomed, making her jump.
Decided what?” she asked, taking another step back.
Whether you’re coming or going.”
Coming, part of her brain said. The part that couldn’t help noticing the ripple of muscles under the thin fabric of his shirt.
Going, the terrified part of her soul screeched. Go, quick.

“You’re nervous,” he said.
I bit my bottom lip. God, yes, I was. But I didn’t say anything, only watched his finger circle around, my stomach fluttering as if a million tiny butterflies danced inside me.
I couldn’t take the titillating sensation of his finger any longer. “Could you excuse me, please? I need to use your facilities.”
“Of course.”
I stood, and he climbed to his feet as well, pointing me in the direction of the bathroom.
As I washed my hands I glanced up to check my face in the mirror, except all I saw was an abstract portrait of a naked woman lying on some sort of sofa, her hand resting down by her core as if she’d been touching herself there. I glanced around the small room for a mirror, but there was none. That was rather strange. I quickly dried my hands and went back out to join Cian.
When I returned to the deck, he was standing by the clear plastic railing, staring out at the bridge. I moved closer, and before I could utter a word, his mouth was on mine. I lifted my hands to his chest, exploring every inch of what was under his shirt. I’d been aching to touch him all night. All week for that matter. He slowly backed me up until my legs hit a cushioned lounge chair and then he laid me down, his one knee positioned between my thighs.
“Magdalena. Beautiful Magdalena.” He kissed my neck and whispered, “I’ve wanted you all week. Do you want me?”
I nodded, unable to find my voice.
“Are you sure it’s not too soon after the breakup? I don’t want you to regret this.”
I swallowed. “I won’t. I should have ended that relationship a long time ago. I want this. I want you.” I meant it too. I had wanted to play it cool, make his desire build a bit more, but I had no willpower, the temptation so overwhelming. I wanted him more than I’d wanted any man before.
His hand skated up my leg to the inside of my thigh. We kissed, the heat soaring through my veins. I undid the rest of the buttons of his shirt and he shrugged it off. His biceps and pecs were firm to my touch, chiseled to perfection and covered with the most fascinating tattoos I’d ever seen. A small, silver bar was pierced through each of his nipples, and I grew wet as I gently sucked on one of them. His expert fingers found their way to my core and he growled a little, I think, when he fingered the wet, barely-there, slim triangle of panty I wore.
“Magdalena. You’re soaked. Soaked for me.”
I gasped when I heard the quick rip and watched what was once my red lace thong hit the ground.
“Sorry, I’ll buy you another,” he huffed into my ear before he shimmied my dress up to my waist, exposing my core to the cool, gentle evening breeze.
His breath hitched at the sight of my bare sex and I almost orgasmed at the sensation of the wind tickling, exciting me. The thought of being outside, completely exposed, with Cian exploring my body in the moonlight was slightly overwhelming. So much for wanting to take it slowly. I was helpless in his arms.

Mattias turned his attention back to the bar to order another drink. A woman sitting a few stools down caught his attention. Her dark hair fell in loose waves hiding half of her pale face, but it didn’t hide her worried expression. She twisted the cocktail napkin with trembling hands.
What distressed her?
She appeared to be alone. Wearing all black from head-to-toe was common in this club, but he sensed she had a different intention. While those who shimmied seductively out on the dance floor strove to be noticed, she pulled her black wrap around her as if she wanted to be cloaked. A worry line furrowed between her brows as she searched the club.
A guy with spiky black hair and goth makeup stepped beside her. By his swagger, Mattias sensed the man would hit on her within the next ten seconds.
It took four.
The man leaned close to her ear and said something. With a wide smile, he appeared confident that whatever he said was clever.
Mattias growled.
Odd. How many times had he witnessed a similar scenario? He shouldn’t have had that possessive response.
“What are you staring at?” Lucan asked.
“Just the usual entertainment. Boy meets girl. Girl flirts or shoots him down. Boy walks away with girl or defeated and alone. I’m hoping this one strikes out.”
The way the woman squirmed aided his case. She responded without much enthusiasm in her expression and looked away. The guy didn’t seem to read her lack of interest.
“My betting days are over,” Lucan said. “Now that we are free, it’s time to pay more interest in our own affairs rather than others.”
“True,” Mattias agreed.
Yet, less than ten seconds passed before he dragged his gaze back to her. The guy was gone. Too bad. Mattias missed the moment when she’d shot him down.
What was wrong with him? Why did he care about that fate of a yet another potential hook up at this club? It meant nothing to him. She meant nothing to him.
“I’ll be right back,” he told his brothers.
He approached the woman. What the hell are you doing? he asked himself.
He ignored his internal voice and continued to walk over.
What the hell are you doing? He repeated.
My duty, he snapped back. I need to make sure she’s all right.
Great, now he was arguing with himself over a complete stranger.
Despite the potent scents of alcohol and perspiration, her subtle fragrance wafted to him. He inhaled it more deeply. A tantalizing swirl of vanilla and nutmeg and wildflowers suffused his brain, triggering a torrent of desire. He stifled a moan of pleasure.
This might have been a bad idea.
He closed his eyes and continued his internal debate. Should he proceed?
Or run?

“No!”
The word was barely out of her mouth when a third surge, as big as a tidal wave, engulfed her, flipping the kayak and sending her plunging into the icy depths.
She struggled to surface, the task made infinitely harder by the layers of clothing that were more hindrance than help now. The cold was so potent, so thorough, she already could not feel her toes, and her fingers would not work like she wanted them to either. Was she really going to drown only a few yards away from the shore of the coterie?
When she felt something brush her side, she twisted her head and much to her surprise, she saw a dolphin there, bumping its head against her arm.
A dolphin? It took her long seconds to realize that she was not actually dead, that the dolphin was a shifter—Finnegan, no doubt. It was like the guy stalked her, although at this moment, she was more grateful than annoyed by that practice.
The dolphin turned its head, showing her its fin, and Cecilia grasped it, clinging to it as the dolphin pushed them both through the water’s surface. She gasped and choked and spat up water as she continued to cling to the dolphin’s back while it propelled them toward shore.
When they were in water that was almost too shallow for Finn’s flippers to work properly, he made one last, great lunge, pushing them forward, and he shifted into human form as he did so. His knees scraped sand, and he pulled Cecilia into his arms, standing and rushing out of the water as he did so.
He ran through the snow-coated sand and dropped to his knees in a small alcove next to the face of the cliff, which was well enough protected from the elements that there was little snow on the ground. By the time he released her, she was shivering violently. Without speaking, he began to undress her, tugging off first the coat and then trying to pull the sweater over her head.
“W-what are y-y-ou d-doing?” she asked through chattering teeth.
“Undressing you. You’re going to develop hyperthermia if I don’t.”
“I d-don’t want y-y-you to s-see me naked,” she protested.
He pulled the sweater over her head anyway. She was in no condition to fight him off.
“If it helps, I’m about to get naked too.”
Her eyes grew wide as saucers. “N-no. Th-that’s worse!”
“Not only that”—he tugged the fleece pants off her legs and then shimmied out of his own pants—“but you’re about to get real close to me, sweetheart.”
When they were both completely naked, he pulled her into his arms, wrapping his legs and arms around her and rubbing her back to stimulate the blood flow.
His elevated body heat instantly warmed her body. Cecilia sighed, closed her eyes, and stopped struggling to get out of his grasp.
“Don’t fall asleep on me, Cici,” he warned. “You need to stay awake. Talk to me.”
“Stop calling me Cici.”
He chuckled. “That’s my girl.” He reached down and massaged her feet, encouraging the flow of blood there.
“This is r-really awkward,” she admitted. Her teeth were beginning to slowly stop chattering.
“I don’t know,” Finn mused. “You don’t think we fit together pretty nicely?”
“You think I’m too thin,” she complained.
She was peripherally aware that a certain part of his anatomy certainly didn’t think so. “You’re not too thin. What makes you think that?”
“You,” she said indignantly. “You told me I’m too thin, that I need to eat more.”
“I see the way you eat,” he said. “You do need to eat more. But maybe I’ve been too hard on skinny chicks. We really do fit perfectly.” He adjusted his position. His erection jerked. Cecilia sucked in a breath.
“It would definitely warm us up,” Finn suggested.
“N-no!”
“Why were you out there anyway?” he asked abruptly. “All alone at dawn? That water is probably thirty-five degrees. And I noticed you weren’t wearing a life jacket. If I hadn’t been here…”
“Why were you here?” Cecilia asked.
“It’s been a week since you’ve tried anything stupid. I figured you were due.”
“So you were stalking me?” The stupid comment hurt, but she refused to let him know it.
“Stalking’s kind of a harsh word. More like keeping an eye on you.”
“Stalking.”
“You really want to get petty about this? I just saved your ass out there. Again.”
