Excerpt from Ruthless Fighter
She was down to her bra and underwear when someone banged loudly at her front door. She marched to the door and sniffed the air, trying to get a hint of who it might be.
She smelled a tiger.
Was he messing with her? Why? Shaking her head, she pulled the door open. "What?"
Parker stood in front of her, his amber eyes glittering with anger. His jaw looked hard, like he was clenching it. "Did you throw rocks at my cabin?"
She held back a laugh and gave him a sweet smile. "Oh, sorry, did I disturb somebody's beauty rest?"
A low growl came from his chest. Kayla stepped back, suddenly remembering that she wasn't wearing all of her clothes. Nudity wasn't really an issue, especially since he very obviously didn't see her in any kind of sexual way, but she felt exposed all of a sudden.
"What's your problem?" Parker asked in a low voice.
His voice was rough like always, like a cat's tongue. Chills erupted over her body at the sound of it. What she wouldn't have given, just a few weeks ago, to hear that voice winding around her in the dark.
She put the imaginary leash on her inner wolf. No time for gamboling flights of fancy.
"My problem is that you don't respect the work I put in." She tried to inject as much venom as possible into her words. Then she added in a sweeter tone, "Also? You're an asshole."
His mouth fell open slightly, as if she'd surprised him. Good. But he recovered quickly, straightening up to his full height. He crowded her against the door frame.
Holy shit. He was huge. Her eyes were level with his chest. This was unfair—he was at an advantage. He was tall, and he had clothes on. Kayla's heart beat wildly in her chest, and her inner wolf strained at that mental leash, desperate to construct new fantasies.
"You're so sure you're right, then?" he asked.
"Heck yeah," she said. She didn't sound half as brave as she wanted to sound. In fact, she sounded more lusty than anything. And that was hardly fair. But Parker's proximity was igniting some very strong feelings, most of them originating from within the silk of her panties.
"Then maybe we should make a bet," he said.
She looked up into his hard, unyielding face. "Fine, let's make a bet. Because we won't find that sphere in the ravine. If I win, you have to..."
She thought for a moment. What was the worst thing for him? She remembered one night, a couple of months back, when Parker, Kayla, and a few of the other RCCers had gone to a club in Montlake, about forty minutes away. Everyone had been dancing—everyone except for Parker. What a boring stick in the mud.
"I got it," she said. "If I win, you have to go to that club in Montlake with me tomorrow night. And you have to dance."
"Fine." His amber eyes didn't even blink. "And if I win, do you know what you have to do?"
She inhaled a shaky breath. He was so close, she could feel the heat of him warming her to the core. If she leaned forward maybe half an inch, she could lick his pec through his t-shirt. If he wanted, he could pick her right up and press her into the door, and she'd wrap her legs around him and she would ride him like—
"Kayla?"
She reclaimed that leash on her inner wolf and shook her head. "Fine, what? What do I have to do if we find the sphere in the ravine?"
Maybe she'd have to kiss him. Maybe she'd have to spend the night with him. From the way he was looking at her, she wouldn't be surprised if he suggested something like that.
He smirked. Did he know what she had been thinking?
Then he said, "If I win, you have to remain completely silent. For twenty-four hours."
She pulled her hand back to slug his arm, but he grabbed her wrist and pressed her even harder against the door. He was hard—everywhere. If she wasn't mistaken, that was his boner pressing into her stomach.
Reluctantly, she let him step back. He turned around and left her half naked in her doorway.
Shaking, Kayla closed the door and leaned against it, facing her bright, shiny cabin. In about three seconds it was going to be her solo fantasy suite. But first, she opened her front door. Parker was walking back to his cabin.
"You know," she called at his retreating back, "I still think you're an asshole."

They had bruised the thick, springy anethum moss. It smelled like the tiny, exotically sweet berries it produced in the fall. Sap, sharp and clean scented, folded around them on the blanket of warm spring air.
Visible through a gap in the leaves, the first and largest moon hung near the tops of the trees, the crescent barely illuminated. The twins would follow, a pair of tidally locked bodies that couldn’t properly be called moons, but her culture did anyway, and planned important events around the rare occasions all three were full and visible in the night sky at the same time.
She sighed. She hadn’t let herself miss her world before, and now she stood to lose it to the Chekydran.
Gentle fingertips brushed her cheekbones. The touch resonated through her nerves, lighting up pathways in the darkest parts of her brain, in places the SEM never accessed. He closed the door between their minds. She gasped.
Desire twisted her the way she’d twist ignition wires.
He caught her lips with his.
Every ounce of Edie narrowed to that contact. To the subtle, sweet taste of him. Old scabs came off her wounded heart.
He deepened the kiss, lingering, taking his time, testing her response, seeming to delight in every gasp and in the quiver running through her muscles.
Lost in the sea of him, she wrapped her arms around him. The weight and heat in her lower belly built to an ache. As if she’d been engineered specifically for him, the stroke of his lips and brush of his tongue left her at the edge of her control.
Panting when he drew a breath away, she muttered a protest. He smoothed a palm up her ribs to cup her breast through her clothes.
She arched into the caress, her body starved for tender attention. To her mortification, her eyes prickled. She pushed against him, weak, muscles barely functioning through the haze of seduction.
His lips returned to hers. Moving. Whispering words she couldn’t hope to comprehend. He kissed the single trail of moisture that spilled, still breathing words against her cheek as if he believed they could sink through her permeable skin.
Maybe they could. Her nerves settled as he gentled and soothed her. Something no one else had bothered to do after her parents had died.
His tenderness tore at her senses. He seemed to register that and lingered, giving her the time and space to assimilate the turmoil of her emotions.
Except she couldn’t. It was too big a task—the past a minefield of wounds each more mortal than the last. But maybe she could drown them briefly. In him.
Edie directed his mouth to hers and applied herself to learning every nuance of his response to her. How his breath stopped in his chest when she gently closed her teeth on his bottom lip. The way he groaned when she unbuttoned his shirt and worked her hands into contact with his skin. His chest expanded to meet her touch. He broke the kiss and encircled her wrist, stilling her hands. He breathed a laugh against her cheekbone and shook his head.
Impatience kicked her. She didn’t deserve his tenderness or his care. The thought jolted her. She reflexively shoved it into shadows.
“We’re wearing too many clothes,” she rasped, tugging against his grasp.
He put a finger to her lips.
She looked at him.
A teasing, self-satisfied gleam lit his eyes. “So impatient.”
Heat rushed to her face. She couldn’t hear. How in the hell had he managed to caress those words down her spine with the shapes of the letters on his lips?
“Will you stay with me?” he asked.
“Do I get to strip you?”
He grinned, sending her senses spinning.
“Eventually.”
“I’m in.”
“My line.”
She sucked in a heated breath at the sly dig. “Hurry.”

Her blond hair was disheveled, with one long lock curled around a plump breast. Twin spots of color filled her cheeks, standing out against her fair skin. If she had the power to kill me with the glare from her pretty blue eyes, I would’ve died on the spot. She was a fierce little thing, and both sides of my being heartily approved. Being mated to the alpha was a challenge for shifter females and even more so for a human. Her intensity would serve her well as she took her rightful place at my side. But first, I had to convince her that was where she belonged...before my wolf broke free and clamped his teeth into her shoulder when she didn’t even know what the hell was going on.
Holding my hands up, palms toward my gorgeous mate, I murmured, “Relax. You’re safe. I’m not going to hurt you.”
“Relax?” she yelled, her eyes narrowing as she pointed her index finger at me. “I don’t know you.” Her middle finger joined the first. “You just carried me out of my best friend’s boyfriend’s house while I was kicking and screaming for you to put me down.” Her ring finger got in on the action before she waved her hand in a small circle. “You brought me to another house, locked the door before putting me down, and you’re standing in front of it to block my exit.” Her hand dropped, and she pressed her fists to her hips. “Don’t you dare tell me to relax after doing your best to scare the crap out of me.”
Knowing she was afraid of me was like an arrow to my heart. I wasn’t about to let her escape until I had the chance to explain who she was to me, but I could at least give her access to the door since I was fast enough to catch her if she somehow got past me. Taking a few steps to the left, I apologized, “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to scare you.”
Her gaze slid to the door before returning to my face. “You do realize how ridiculous that sounds, right? How else did you expect me to react to the stunt you pulled? You can’t just go around kidnapping people and then act all surprised when they’re afraid.”
“It worked for Zeke,” I grumbled, wondering how my beta had gotten Allegra to accept him so damn quickly.
“I’m still unclear on exactly what happened between my best friend and Zeke last night, but I’m pretty sure you can’t compare him rescuing her from a car accident to you carting me off in the middle of a conversation you weren’t even a part of.” The cutest little wrinkle formed in the middle of her forehead, and I wanted to brush my lips across it. “He was acting like a hero, but what you did was more along the lines of a villain.”
My wolf almost went berserk at the possibility of my mate preferring Zeke over me. I held still, forcing my beast to remain within my skin until she was ready to meet him. Once he was no longer ready to tear across the street to rip Zeke’s throat out, and I had him back under control, I prowled closer to my mate. My lips curved up in a satisfied smirk when she held her ground, refusing to back down from me. There was only the slightest whiff of fear in her delicious scent. No matter how scared my mate thought she should be, she felt the pull between us the same as me, and it was stronger than her uneasiness with the situation. “You can kid yourself all you want, but Zeke would’ve done the same damn thing with Allegra if he’d had to.”
“I find that difficult to believe,” she scoffed with a frown. “He’s the freaking sheriff. It’s not like he’s going to run around kidnapping women when his job is all about upholding the law.”
I shrugged my shoulders, and my smile widened. “So what if he’s the sheriff? I’m the mayor of Timber Ridge, and that didn’t stop me from taking you out of his house.”

He chose me. And I chose him. And that was all that mattered.
A smile spread across my face. “I’m ready for our mating ceremony, Teken.”
His face lit up, and I suddenly realized with a flush of warmth that he had been fearing I’d reject him.
“Sheleki, you are truly a blessing from the gods.” He watched me closely, the look in his eyes making me feel precious and beautiful. “And whatever it takes, Ella, I’ll do it to make you happy.”
“You already do, Teken. You make me gloriously happy.” And I meant it.
He pinned me with his gaze. He stared at me as though he had so much to say and no words to do his thoughts justice. Suddenly, he was holding my face in his hands, and he kissed the ever-loving sh*t out of me.
I met his kiss with a force of my own. Our tongues swiping, tasting, asking, begging. I pulled away and bit his bottom lip, tugging slightly before I relinquished it. When the kiss was over, we were both out of breath.
“Mate,” he said huskily.
His gravelly voice sent vibrations of lust throughout my body.
“Always,” I replied, holding his stare.
Being abducted to his world had been a science fiction nightmare, but finding him was the best thing that had ever happened to me.
Teken had my heart, and finding something so genuine in the most difficult and dangerous of situations—as we did—was a rare and beautiful gift.
There was nothing I wouldn’t do to be with my Gladiator… and he to be with his mate and sheleki.
I’d found a partner, lover, friend, and protector in one gorgeous package.
He was truly the love of my life, and I was damn proud to call him my Wulfaen mate.

I stood on the other side of the door while she shouted in outrage, “You’re just going to leave me cuffed to your bed naked? Pretty skeezy move, don’t you think?”
“Stop the poltergeist shit and—” I almost said I’d uncuff her. Stupid move. I couldn’t uncuff her, no way. “I’ll come back in.”
“It’s not me.”
I leaned against the closed door, trying not to picture her heaving chest and her pink cheeks. She was quiet for a minute, likely reflecting on the clear-as-day lie she’d just told me.
“It’s not something I can control,” she said, the fight draining from her voice. “It just happens. I swear.”
Truth.
Was it too much to ask that whatever trouble she was in was beyond her control? Probably. But I wanted to believe that. If she wasn’t at fault, then I wouldn’t have to turn her in to my alpha. I could leave her in my bed, cuffed, and the two of us could get better acquainted.
“Who are you running from?” I asked.
Silence.
Sighing, I asked, “What kind of trouble are you in?”
“I never said I was in trouble.”
I laughed.
She gave a growl of frustration. “Are you going to stand out there playing bad cop and stupid cop, or are you going to come back in here and let me go?”
She wasn’t going to talk to me, not really. And I needed answers if I was going to figure out my next move. I knew just where to start.
“I’ll be back soon,” I said. “Try not to break anything else while I’m gone.”
“I knew I should never trust a shifter,” she called, her voice growing fainter as I strode down the hall and out the front door.
I couldn’t trust me, either. I couldn’t trust that I’d keep my hands to myself.

Movement on the right side of the street caught his eye. One second the road was clear, and the next his headlights highlighted a familiar female figure in the failing light.
No!
His foot slammed the brakes, but the three-and-a-half-ton truck just couldn't stop that fast. She disappeared from view and the sickening thump that followed made his heart stop and his stomach climb into his throat.
Throwing the truck into park, he leapt out and bent to look beneath his vehicle. Don't be her. Don't be her. God, please don't let it be her.
It was.
Her body lay twisted at an odd angle underneath his truck.
He'd killed her.
He sank to the ground next to her, tears watering his eyes. The asphalt bit into his knees like shards of glass. The pain was nothing compared to the fear that he'd lost the only girl he'd ever cared about. It didn't matter that she thought they were just high school classmates. Luke had known since junior high, Kara McClure would eventually be his.
“Kara?”
He touched her neck, looking for a pulse. It was faint, but the blood pooling beneath her body meant it wouldn't last long. “You can't die on me, Kara. Do you hear me?” Leaning forward, he ignored basic first aid rules and pulled her out from under the giant truck. He put his face to hers, feeling for breath. The tiniest puff of air blew against his cheek, but even that was labored. He could hear a gurgle in her chest.
She would be dead in minutes. He had no doubt in his mind. There wasn't time to get her to the hospital, or to call for an ambulance. Losing her wasn't an option.
He glanced up at the orange sky, now laced with shades of purple. Time was running out. He would shift as soon as the moon rose. If he didn't take a chance now, he'd lose her forever. Somewhere without Kara wasn't anywhere at all. His life would be over if she died tonight. He lifted her from the asphalt and hugged her to his chest. Warm liquid from her head wound slicked his left hand and tears began to fall down his cheeks.
“Chun tú Geallaim mo chroí agus anam go deo.”
No hesitation. The words rolled from his tongue as if he'd been waiting to say them his whole life.
“Chun tú Geallaim mo chroí agus anam go deo,” he repeated, pleading from the depths of his being for the spell to take hold quickly, for her blood to stop running in sickening warm streams down his wrist.
The ancient pledge would bind his essence to hers and heal her wounds. She would be able to recover from nearly any injury for as long as he lived. He'd deal with the consequences of his choice later. For now all that mattered was that Kara lived.
“Fight, Kara. Please.”

“Don’t remove the bandage.” Wynne crossed her arms and pegged Damian with a warning stare. She’d brought him back from the brink of death. The least he could do was allow himself to heal.
Seated on the couch, Damian dwarfed the claw-footed furniture that had been in the Becknell family for more than a century. Dressed in dark jeans, combat boots, an ever-present pair of black leather gloves and nothing else, he sported six-pack abs, a broad chest, and a couple of biceps larger than any she’d seen. He was a massive male, a gargoyle night guardian, and her current crush.
“You mean this one?” He pried the bandage from his chest, tossed it into the garbage can across the room, and met her gaze. A deep rich bronze, his eyes matched his skin tone, courtesy of his African ancestors. He winked at her, and his lip curled into a lopsided grin.
Wynne’s temper flared, and the kindling she’d stacked in the fireplace burst to life.
Damian raised an eyebrow then chuckled.
Wynne pursed her lips. “Don’t be so casual. When you dragged yourself here three nights ago, I wasn’t sure I could save you. A fae shredded your chest and almost ripped your spark stone right off. That takes longer to heal than your skin. You’re lucky I had some of the rare magic salve.”
His spark stone flared a deep red. Her chest tightened, and she recalled what he really was—a gargoyle. The special gem, placed over his heart, contained a piece of his spirit. Claimed at death as a questionable soul by the goddess, Rhiannon, he served her in the war against Gwawl and his fae army.
He rose from the couch, and the hard muscles in his shoulders bunched, the new scar on his chest pulling taut against his skin. Strength rolled off him like fog coming in from the ocean which only added to his imposing presence. With the natural grace given to him by the Goddess, he closed the distance in an instant, wrapped one gloved hand around her waist, and cradled her chin in his palm.
A shot of adrenaline kicked Wynne’s pulse skyward. Her hands landed on those massive biceps, hard as steel beneath his smooth, warm skin.
He leaned forward, trapping her between his body and the brick fireplace. His breath tickled her ear and sent a shiver to tingle her bottom.
“I so enjoy your tough, demanding side,” he purred.
 “So, I’ve discovered,” she whispered.
