“I am not going to submit to you.”

His entire body went still.

There was so much prickly hate in her tone, and yet under him he was aware of her curves. Her scent, musky, sugary, and one hundred percent lush female, reached out to him.

His gaze dropped to her lips. He hardened even more against her belly. She must have felt it, too. “What do you want?” Her chin trembled.

He wanted to tell her he was there to get her out of there, he was there to help her, he was going to take her to safety and protect her and watch over her, and he opened his mouth to tell her, but of course, no words came out.

Nothing except a hoarse sound.

His features tightened. He’d never felt more helpless in his life. He needed to reassure her, but how?

Her gaze darted to his mouth then slid to his throat.

She swallowed. He knew she had spotted the scars of the collar that had dug into his skin. It marked him out as being a victim. Just like her.

Some of the tension seemed to leave her body.

Still her big amber eyes blinked at him warily. “Maybe you are not one of them; you are certainly not dressed like the Fae soldiers.” Her gaze flicked to his vest, then back to his face.

“But I don’t know who you are and why you are holding me down.” She gnawed on her lower lip.

He wanted to reach down and brush his thumb over that glistening flesh. How would her mouth taste?

As if aware of the direction his thoughts had taken, she bared her teeth and hissed. Feral creature. And she’d called him a beast?

He felt her pull her leg back, as if she intended to kick him, or worse, knee him again.

He gripped his arms around her body, making sure to keep her arms captive, then angled his much heavier weight just so, to hold her legs down.

Her eyes widened, the amber growing darker until her entire irises burned a curious shade of gold.

He felt the tension gather inside her as she opened her mouth to scream again. And no way could he stand hearing that cry of fear again. He needed to reassure her.
Going with instinct, he opened his mouth to tell her she could trust him, but all that emerged was a low purr—a deep, harmonious sound that seemed to be wrenched out of his very heart.

He froze.

The woman under him froze, too, then she blinked.
