Peeling off my clothes, I stepped into the master bathroom. Turning on my steam shower, I jumped in, quickly washing my hair and body. Stepping out, I grabbed a fluffy white towel and was drying off when the bathroom door burst open. And Jackal was standing at the threshold, gawking at my dripping wet body.
I wrapped the towel around myself. “Ever heard of knocking?”
“Sorry, but I’m not leaving until I do what I came here for.” He shook the bottle of hydrogen peroxide.
I took a long, deep audible breath. “Do it and then leave.”
He nodded with his lips pressed together. Marching forward, he picked me up, plopping me onto the granite countertop. He dabbed a cotton swab against my knee while I stiffly sat there.
“Reason… I want you more than my next breath, but I can’t give you what you really need.”
“And that is?” My heart raced.
“A man who can give you forever.” His eyes locked with mine. “And that man isn’t me.” He swallowed. “With Josie, I loved and lost. Frankly, I’m not strong enough to go through that shit again. But that doesn’t have to stop you and me from enjoying the here and now. Just with no commitment or obligation.”
No commitment or obligation? With those four words, he simultaneously broke and steeled my heart.
“It’s okay. I understand,” I said simply. “But I’m not settling for less than all of you. Now get the fuck out. And don’t come back to me until you’re ready to give me forever.”
He stared at me, stunned. Then his jaw tightened before he placed the bottle of peroxide on the counter and stormed out of the bathroom.
I couldn’t move. Every fiber of my body was numb.
I felt defeated. Worthless.
