Elijah spun me around and silently stared at me. “I’m not him, Hope.”
My eyes lowered briefly before locking onto him. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“Don’t ever fucking lie to me. If you’re not ready to talk about it, I’ll let it go . . . for now. But I won’t allow you to taint the trust I’m trying to build.”
My body tensed. “Trust? Let’s get something straight, Elijah. I will not deny I want you,” I admitted with more steel in my voice than I actually felt. “But we are not building anything. Got me?”
He leaned closer, whispering, “Oh, I get it. I get I scare the shit out of you. But understand this. I’m not going anywhere. I’m tired of waiting for you to open your eyes and see the man who’s willing to give you everything you need. This man.” He pointed at himself.
His words thrummed through my body. My traitorous flesh was under his control.
“That’s not going to happen.”
“Believe me, Hope. It will. You will be mine—mind, body, and soul—and that is a fucking fact,” he replied. “And to prove I know you so well, I’ll tell you exactly how this night is going to play out. I will make you come, hard, and you will push me away and run away with your tail between your legs. I will allow you to run, and I won’t chase you. And do you know why?” He cocked his head, desire flaring in his eyes.
My nails dug into his forearms. “Why?” I whispered.
“Because you will come back to me of your own free will. In your heart, you know you belong to me and I to you.” His voice lowered.
