GARRETT

A huff escaped from between my lips as I slid onto an empty barstool at Riley’s. The ache in my chest had turned from an annoying throb to the pounding of a fatal wound. If not for the Lycan moral code, I’d already be hauling ass up to Ada to bring Charlie down to Sanctuary, kicking and screaming if necessary. Her feelings on the matter could be discussed later. She should be with us. Somehow, we had to make her see that. Being away from her slowly ate away pieces of my soul. The scent of her heat clung to my brother and I. No amount of cold showers would relieve the need that hardened my dick every time I thought about her, either.
I couldn’t believe she’d sent Travis and I both away. We’d risked our lives. Saved her from Xerxes’ clutches in Savannah. Yet she’d sent us packing with no regard to the developing magickal bond torturing all three of us. There was no way she wasn’t hurting either. Once a mate bond started growing, only death would snap the connection.
My brother, Travis, sat next to me and waved to the tall redhead at the far end of the bar. Riley Moore acted as pack liaison between Rose, the town of Sanctuary’s leader and founder, and the rest of the Lycans in town. It helped keep the peace, and most of us tried to avoid Rose anyway… except when the cafe served really good food. Which tended to be more often than not.
“What’s happening, boys?” Riley asked, setting a pair of freshly filled beer steins in front of us. “You look like you swallowed a rattlesnake and it’s trying to come back up, Garrett. What’s eating you?”
“Nothing.” I hoped she would accept the answer and just leave, but Riley didn’t budge. In fact, she plopped her elbows on the bar and leaned forward, balancing her chin on her laced-together fingers.
“That’s a bunch of bullshit.” Her gaze flitted toward my brother. “You don’t look much better, hon,” she said to Travis. “I hear you left someone both of you want up in Ada.”
“Who told you, Riley?”
“People talk,” she said, winking. “This is a bar. Nothing stays secret for long when it stumbles in here.”

“I know Christmas is still a few days away, but I’ve brought you a gift, to prove to you I’m sincere.”

With the horse’s reins in his hand, Asher paused before rounding the corner of the stone building, cringing at the sound of Prince Julian Montclair’s oily voice.

No doubt he was talking to Princess Charlotte of Mecosta. Julian had been chasing the princess’s skirts since that day, ten years ago, when he’d come across Asher and Charlotte kissing in the woods and had been so furious, he had Asher thrown into the dungeons beneath his father’s castle.

Sure, Asher was a pauper, and the princess—well, she wasn’t supposed to be locking lips with someone so beneath her station—but gods be damned, they’d been thirteen at the time. The punishment hadn’t exactly fit the crime.

Asher had intended to give Juniper a run, but not if it meant he would have to interact with those two. Shaking his head, he turned to trudge back to the stable, but paused when Charlotte spoke.

“Why do you think you need to prove your sincerity by giving me a necklace, Julian?”

“The serving girl comes to mind,” Julian said.

“You insisted that was entirely innocent. Are you changing your story?” Charlotte’s voice was frosty.

“No, not at all. It’s just … I know you were upset by it. Even if it was innocent. Because, of course, it looked … well, we all know what it looked like.”

Asher leaned forward to better catch her response, which was silly since he doubted she would say, “It looked like you were trying to convince that serving girl to share your bed that night. And considering you’re a prince, it probably happened. Even though you’re supposed to be courting me and treating me like the princess I am, the queen I will someday be.”

But in fact, she didn’t say anything at all, and eventually, Julian cleared his throat. “It’s enchanted. See how it has started to glow with a blue light? That’s how you know your one true love is near.”

Yeah right. An enchanted necklace? Asher could conjure magic like that in his sleep. And he’d bet last week’s pay that Prince Julian paid someone to cast a charm over it. Because everyone and the gods were fully aware the man could barely invoke the simplest of spells.

But power and control were all about the station one was born into, and Julian Montclair has been one lucky son of a bitch—no, son of a queen—since the moment he came into this world.

“It’s lovely,” Charlotte said. “And it’s warm to the touch.” Her voice drifted over Asher, making him hard like it always did. He grit his teeth, angry with himself for being so stupid. There were plenty of women in the village who were of an acceptable station and perfectly happy to warm his bed for a day, an hour, a year, however long he was willing—and he wouldn’t end up on the gallows the next morning, either.
Yet all he did was yearn for a woman he couldn’t have. A woman he didn’t really want.

Okay, didn’t want to want.

“It’s channeling my feelings,” Julian’s unctuous voice said. He was touching her, too, no doubt. He’d likely removed his gloves so he could rub his hands over her arms, his fingers probably grazing the sides of her breasts. Asher had seen him do it too many times to those serving girls he swore he wasn’t sleeping with. It was his signature move.

Bastard.

Clearly tired of skulking here instead of going for the ride Asher had promised, Juniper nickered and pawed the ground.

Damn it.

“Oh. Who’s there?”

And then the princess stepped into view, resplendent as ever in a pale blue cloak lined with white fur, white leather gloves, and a matching hat perched at a slightly off-kilter angle on her golden curls. Those almond-shaped blue eyes widened for a moment when her gaze fell onto Asher, and the sides of her rose-colored lips lifted into a smile. For him. And the fact that they moved at all meant she hadn’t been smiling before.

Gods be damned, he’d spent his whole miserable life pining for things he couldn’t have, and this woman was most definitely the farthest out of reach of all his unobtainable dreams.

Saving Jace: Writing a Sexy Black Panther

I’ll admit, I like my shifters alpha. Dark, a little dominating, protective of their mates, defenders of their clans….
And if he shifts to a black panther? Sign me up!
Enter Jace Jones.
When I started Saving Jace (#4, Fada Shapeshifters), I’d already written four novels in the Fada Shapeshifter Seriesa prequel and three books set in the Rock Run Clan. But those books featured water shapeshifters like dolphins and sharks.
So Jace was my first big cat. From the start, he was a green-eyed black panther. One of the first things I discovered was that black panthers are a color variant of any Panthera species.  In Asia and Africa, black panthers are leopards, and in the Americas, they’re jaguars.

Jace Jones, my black panther shifter

Since my books are set mainly in North America, I made Jace a jaguar. Here’s Evie's first sight of him as his cat in Saving Jace.
A little background: Earlier in the evening, Evie Morningstar and her teenage brother found Jace (in his human form) bleeding out from a fae assassin's attack. They carried him inside and cleaned up his wound. Ill and feverish, he passed out on their couch.

Evie jerked awake to see Jace thrashing about on the couch.
She fumbled for the switch on the lamp next to the chair. It came on and he hissed, an angry cat-sound.
She narrowed her eyes against the light, trying to see him. “Jace? You all right?”
He ignored her to chug water from the pitcher on the table and then fumbled with the zipper of his pants.
She rose to her feet. “Jace? What are you doing?”
His gaze swung to her and she took a step back. His eyes were that strange bright green again. His growl raised fine hairs all over her body.
“Okay.” She raised a palm. “Take it easy.”
He snarled and dragged off the pants. Bright bits of color danced over his skin—and then a huge black panther was crouched on her couch.

The jaguar is the largest cat found in the Americas, with black jaguars making about 6 percent of the total. These badass, elusive cats live in the densest part of jungles and forests where there is the least sunlight.
So of course, the next time Evie sees Jace he’s in the shadowsand very much in protective alpha mode, because he’s afraid that in saving him, she’s brought trouble on herself.

Someone was watching her.
Evie gripped her keys and glanced around.
Across the alley, a pair of luminous green eyes stared at her unblinkingly from the shadows.
Her heart kicked into a gallop. “Jace? Is that you?”
Please let it be him.
He stepped forward. She blew out a breath. It was Jace.
He crossed the alley in a few long, loose strides. An atavistic tremor went down her spine. This was the real Jace—and he was nothing like the injured, feverish victim of last week.
No, this man was dark. Powerful. Raw-boned.
A panther in a T-shirt and jeans.
She squared her shoulders and lifted her chin, because damn it, she’d saved the man’s life. She refused to let him spook her.
He stopped a few feet away. “Hello, Evie.”
He was bigger than she remembered, but then, last week he’d been hunched over nursing his injuries. Now she realized he was a good half foot taller than her with the lean, hard build of a soldier. Another shiver went down her spine—but this one had nothing to do with fear.

I have to say, writing a black panther shifter was so much fun, and I loved the chemistry between Jace and Evie! I was thrilled when Saving Jace was chosen as Best Shifter Novel of 2018 in the Paranormal Romance Guild’s Reviewer’s Choice Awards. The book also received a silver medal in the RONE Awards.
